Falklands war – level 2
The Falkland Islands are two large islands and many small islands in the South Atlantic Ocean east of Argentina. The islands were first seen in 1600 and no people lived there at that time. Now about 3000 people live there. There were a lot of arguments about who is the owner of these islands. Both Argentina and the UK say that they own them.
From the year 1833 the islands were a part of the UK but Argentina always disagreed with it. Argentina took the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982. But the British didn’t like it. They sent war ships and submarines to the region and the war started. It was only two months long and ended on 14 June 1982, 29 years ago.
The British won and the Falkland Islands are still their islands. 257 British soldiers, 649 Argentine soldiers and 3 civilian Falkland people died in this war. The UK won but Argentina still say that it is not a part of the UK.
