First cinema – level 2
Thomas Alva Edison made the first film camera in the world in 1891. But he didn’t think that he made something special so he didn’t pay 150 dollars for an international patent. And so the Lumiere brothers from France used his idea and improved it. They made a new film camera – cinematograph. This new machine could record films but it also showed them to many people. On Friday 22nd March 1895, 35 people saw the first film in the world. It showed workers how they were leaving the Lumiere factory after work.
People loved it very much but the Lumiere brothers didn’t think they had something special. It took another year before they sold the film camera to Georges Melies, the first director in the world. They didn’t want to sell it before because they thought that it wasn’t fair. In their eyes, the film camera wasn’t good for business.
The Lumiere brothers weren’t the first people who made a film camera. But they were the first who showed film to many people. They created the first cinema in the world.
