I have a dream – level 3

A black lady refused to stand up from her seat on a city bus when a white man wanted to sit down. She was arrested. It happened in Montgomery, USA in 1955. This incident started a boycott of city buses in Montgomery by black people. They wanted to stop having different seats on buses for black and white people. The black people stopped using city buses and they walked. There was no money for the bus company. The boycott took one year and after one year the government said that separation is against the law. The black people won.

One of the leaders of the boycott was Martin Luther King. He was a human rights activist. His work culminated in his famous speech in Washington on August 28, 1963. The name of the speech is “I have a dream”. He wanted the same rights for all people both black and white. He was very successful in his work. In 1964 he became the youngest person who received the Nobel Peace Prize. Martin Luther King was killed on April 4, 1968. Martin Luther King birthday is now a holiday in the USA.

This is the text for the video. The second part is difficult to understand.

In 1961 protesters in New Georgia demonstrated again discrimination. They were arrested despite following the principle of non-violence preached by Martin Luther King Junior. In Washington on August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King Junior made his famous plea for freedom and equality.

I have a dream that one day...
