Mermaid – level 1
A mermaid lives in water. A mermaid is a woman. But she doesn’t have legs. Her legs are like a fish. People have a lot of stories about mermaids in books.
The word “mermaid” is from two words. “Mere” is an Old English word for “sea”. And “maid” is a word for “young woman”.
The stories about Mermaids are 3000 years old. People know the story about The Little Mermaid very well. Hans Christian Andersen wrote this story.
Mermaids are beautiful. But they are usually bad. Because they take people under water. They forget people can’t live under water. So they kill them when they take them under water.
This short video is about Mermaids too:
Marshall, do you know how the myth (story) of mermaids came to be?
It was 300 years ago. Sailors stuck (stopped) at sea would get desperate (they needed very much) for female companionship (women). They got so bad that eventually (at the end) the manatees (sea animals) out in the water started to look like beautiful women, mermaids.
Let’s go get some tail (last part of a fish).
