Wimbledon champion – level 2

04/07/2011 11:10

Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic is the Wimbledon champion. She is 21 years old. She beat Maria Sharapova in two sets and won her first Grand Slam title. Maria Sharapova won Wimbledon in 2004. Kvitova beat her 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court on Saturday.

Kvitova is the first Czech woman after Jana Novotna in 1998 who won Wimbledon, and Novotna and Martina Navratilova were in the Royal Box.

“It’s hard to find some words,” Kvitova said after the match. “I’m standing here with the trophy and I see some great players in the Royal Box. It’s very nice that Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna are watching me and supported me all the time during the tournament and gave me some help.”

Sharapova said after the match: “There is only one winner at the end of day. I had great support for so many years. I was in the final this year. I wanted to get the trophy and I’m going to be back and will get it again.”
