Wimbledon champion – level 3

04/07/2011 11:10

Petra Kvitova from the Czech Republic is the latest Wimbledon champion. The 21-year-old eighth seed beat Maria Sharapova in two straight sets and won her first Grand Slam title. Maria Sharapova won the Wimbledon Championships in 2004. Kvitova beat her 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court on Saturday.

Kvitova is the first Czech since Jana Novotna in 1998 to win Wimbledon, and Novotna and former Czech great Martina Navratilova were in the Royal Box.

“It’s hard to find some words,” Kvitova said after the match. “I’m standing here with the trophy and I see some great players in the Royal Box. It’s very nice that Martina Navratilova and Jana Novotna are watching me and have supported me all the time during the tournament and gave me some advice.”

Sharapova said after the match: “Unfortunately there is only one winner at the end of day. I have had amazing support over so many years. I have reached the final. I wanted to get the trophy and I’m going to be back and will get it again.”
