12/04/2011 23:30

In April 1961, the first man was in space. It was on Wednesday 12 April 1961 in the morning. It was 50 years ago. Yuri Gagarin started his way from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in today’s Kazakhstan.

He was preparing for many long months with 5 other men. They had to go through hard tests and training. From these 5 men the Soviet management chose Yuri Gagarin. His tests were very good but he also looked very good, he had good heart and his name Yuri was better for the management than names of other candidates.

He started his way at 9:07 in the morning. The name of his spaceship was Vostok 1. The flight was 1 hour and 48 minutes long. He flew 327 kilometres high. He flew once all around the planet. At that moment he was the most famous man in the world.
