A boxer can become a president – level 2

24-09-2021 07:00

The Philippines boxing star and senator Manny Pacquiao announced that he wanted to become president. Elections are taking place next year, and Pacquaio has a good chance to win.

Both Pacquaio and the current president Rodrigo Duterte come from the southern island, and Pacquaio could be dangerous for Duterte. If many people vote for Pacquaio, a strong opposition may be there.

Pacquaio became a senator in 2016, and in the beginning, he supported Duterte. Later, he started to criticize the president. He did not agree with the president’s opinion on a situation in the South China Sea and with the president’s possible corruption. Pacquaio said that he was a fighter, and he would fight until the end.

Difficult words: opposition (the politicians who belong to the largest party which does not lead the government), criticize (to speak openly about someone’s problems), corruption (when a powerful person does something dishonest or bad, and he usually gets money for it).
