Aztec dogs - level 2

Aztec dogs - level 2

07-03-2014 15:00

A team of archaeologists have discovered the remains of 12 Aztec dogs in Mexico City. The dog remains are around 500 years old.

Experts believe that they have found the world’s oldest canine cemetery. Aztecs believed that dogs were the guardians of the dead. Dogs were buried together with humans to guide them to the afterlife. Dogs were also found under pyramids, as the Aztecs believed that they would protect the structures.

However, the experts don’t have much information about the cemetery. They will continue digging at the site and try to find out more.

Difficult words: canine (dog), guardian (somebody who helps with something), afterlife (life after death).
