Baby born in sac - level 3

Baby born in sac - level 3

11-03-2015 15:00

A mother in California was left in awe after her baby boy was born inside his amniotic sac, a rare occurrence that happens in less than one in 80,000 births. Ten-week-old Silas Johnson, who was 26 weeks premature, was delivered encased in the protective water-filled sac, with his placenta and umbilical cord tucked inside. Pictures show Silas curled up inside, with his tiny hands and a leg clearly visible.

Silas was born by Cesarean and had to be cut out of the sac by doctors. He was then given help to take his first breaths.

The amniotic sac is a bag of clear pale fluid inside the womb, where the unborn baby develops and grows. Usually the sac breaks on its own during birth in a process known as the mother’s water breaking.

According to the Cedar Sinai Medical Centre in California, Silas is healthy and almost ready to go home.

Difficult words: awe (respect or shock), amniotic sac (the bag an unborn baby lives inside), occurrence (event), premature (early), encase (to cover completely), placenta (the mother’s body makes this organ to feed the unborn baby), umbilical cord (the mother’s body makes this long tube of skin to connect her to her unborn baby), tiny (very small), Cesarean (when a woman gets an operation to cut her baby out), pale (white), fluid (liquid), womb (the mother’s body keeps the baby inside of this).
