A fireworks display in California has gone horribly wrong after rockets flew into a crowd leaving 28 people injured.

Thousands of people gathered in a park in Simi Valley to watch the Independence Day celebrations when the fireworks landed in the crowd. Those hit were aged between 8 and 78 and suffered shrapnel and projectile wounds. Twenty people were taken to hospitals with four seriously injured.

It's believed one of the fireworks launching station fell over after another firework was ignited, sending others into the crowd.

An investigation is ongoing but police has said the incident was an accident.

Interesting words: projectile (shot object like a rocket or bullet), wound (hole in body), ignite (start burning), ongoing (still in progress).
