Big floods in Mauritius – level 3
A day of national mourning has been declared on the island of Mauritius where at least 11 people have died in severe floods. Most of the victims died after being trapped underground, some in this pedestrian subway.
Torrential rain hit the island's capital Port Louis on Saturday. Within just two hours the powerful downpour turned roads into rivers.
Emergency services have been working around the clock to help those caught up in the disaster. But not everyone could be rescued.
Weather forecasts say further thunderstorms could cause more flooding in the days to come.
It's reported that water levels are now starting to recede but people living there will be hoping that the further rain won't bring as much death and destruction.
Interesting words: mourning (sadness), severe (very bad), torrential (heavy), around the clock (nonstop), recede (go down).
