Car hits many people - level 3

Car hits many people - level 3

12-08-2013 06:00

A man waits in his Dodge Avenger by the side of the road and then speeds off. Moments after, he has ploughed into a number of people in Venice Beach in California, causing terror and injuries. The footage of the accident is distressing. The woman in the pink top is the first to be struck, while the hit-and-run also injures eleven other people.

An Italian woman died later in hospital. She had been on a honeymoon.

Footage shot moments earlier showed the man arriving in his car and park up. As he watches the crowd, he appears to have a brief conversation with two people before getting out himself.

Witnesses say the driver apparently tried to steer his car into a second group of people. Police say a thirty-eight-year-old man later handed himself in and has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The Venice boardwalk is a major tourist attraction known for its mixture of shops and restaurants, but after the hit-and-run a section of it became a makeshift treatment site as people came to the aid of the injured.

Difficult words: speed off (drive away quickly), plough (drive into), distressing (can make you sad), brief (short), steer (drive), boardwalk (place at a beach where a lot of people walk), makeshift (only for some time).
