The Chernobyl catastrophe was on 26 April 1986 in Chernobyl, Ukraine. In 1986 Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union.
The accident made a big radioactive cloud. This cloud travelled around Russia, Central Europe and Western Europe. The cloud was also in England and Scotland.
The Chernobyl catastrophe was very big. 500 000 workers tried to clean the place, but the place was very radioactive for many years after the catastrophe.
In the beginning, the Soviet Union didn’t tell people about the accident. The people in the Soviet Union got the first information about the accident two days later. 350 000 were evacuated from the place. Many people had problems with their bodies.
The Soviet Union told Russian people but the world didn’t know about the accident. On 28th April, the radioactive cloud started alarms in one city in Sweden. Only after this information, the Soviet Union said that there was an accident.
