Chernobyl catastrophe in 1986 - level 3

The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which was at that time a part of the Soviet Union.

The accident created a huge radioactive cloud that covered a big part of Russia and almost all the countries in Central and Western Europe as far as England and Scotland.

It was the biggest nuclear disaster in history. 500 000 workers tried to clean the area but the place remained very radioactive for many years after the disaster.

First, the Soviet government didn’t tell anybody about the accident. The Soviet people got the first information about the accident two days later. 350 000 were evacuated from the area but many people had health problems because of this disaster.

However, the Soviet Union didn’t tell the world about it yet. On 28^th April, the radiation levels set off alarms in one power plant in Sweden. It was only after this information that the Soviet Union admitted that an accident had happened.
