Colombian volcano eruption 26 years ago - level 3
Armero was a town in Colombia. November 13th 1985 was the day when this town was completely destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The name of the volcano was "Nevado del Ruiz". There were 31,000 people living in Armero before this tragedy happened and around 23,000 people died. A lot of Colombians were angry after the tragedy because the government received warnings to evacuate people but they didn´t do it in time. So people say that Armero’s disaster was the government’s responsibility. A newspaper wrote, “The volcano didn´t kill thousands of people. The government did". The town of Armero was an important place for business before the tragedy. Today we can only see a petrol station and some destroyed buildings.
