Controlled explosion in Germany - level 3

Controlled explosion in Germany - level 3

11-02-2014 15:00

The record-breaking moment a disused university tower block in Germany is detonated, in what’s the biggest controlled explosion ever in Europe.

It took almost a tonne of explosives 10 seconds to turn the 381-foot Goethe University tower to dust during a series of controlled implosions.

Thousands gathered around the edge of the exclusion zone to say goodbye to the towers, with people having been banned from entering the surrounding streets from midnight.

And once the sizeable pile of rubble has been cleared, the 1972 construction will be replaced with two high-rise office buildings.

Difficult words: disused (not used), implosion (inward explosion), exclusion zone (dangerous area), rubble (broken parts of a destroyed building).
