The Falkland Islands are two large islands and many small islands in the South Atlantic Ocean east of Argentina. The islands were discovered in 1600 and no people lived there at that time. Now there are about 3000 people living there. There have been a lot of arguments over which country these islands belong to. Both Argentina and the UK claim to own them.

Since 1833 the islands had been a part of the UK but Argentina always disagreed with it. Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands on 2 April 1982. The British response came soon. They sent ships and submarines to the region and the war started. It was only two months long and ended on 14 June 1982.

The British won and the Falkland Islands remain their territory. It resulted in the deaths of 257 British soldiers, 649 Argentine soldiers and 3 civilian Falkland Islanders. The UK won but Argentina didn’t give up its claim.
