Fantasy writer Terry Pratchett - level 2
Terry Pratchett writes fantasy stories and that’s why many people didn’t hear about his books. His stories are different from typical fantasy literature, for example Tolkien’s The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings. Terry Pratchett’s stories have humour and intelligence. His people are realistic and funny. One man, who is in many of the books, is DEATH. He looks like the Death from other stories. But Terry Pratchett’s DEATH is different. He has problems. He wants to understand the people who he has to kill. He tries to help his granddaughter and so on. He is really a comic man.
Much of the humour in the books comes from the clever use of language, so it is very difficult to translate them. But Terry Pratchett’s books were translated and are popular in many different languages.
Terry Pratchett was born April 28, 1948. His first story was published in the school magazine when he was 13. Two years later the same story was published in the magazine Science Fantasy. He got some money for it and he bought his first typewriter. When he left school, Terry worked as a journalist and wrote his own stories in his free time. His first novel was published in 1971. In 1986 Terry finished his normal job and concentrated on writing full time. Today, the number of his successful books is very big. He wrote 36 books and many of his books were translated into more than 30 different languages.
