Fires in California - level 2

12-08-2015 07:00

Nine thousand firefighters are battling 20 large fires in California.

One wildfire scorched about 54,000 acres in an area which is 338 kilometres north of San Francisco. This particular fire has doubled in size in five days. Authorities said that the fire destroyed 24 homes. More than 12,000 people received mandatory evacuation orders.

A different fire killed a US forest ranger on Thursday near the Oregon border.

Difficult words: scorch (to burn the surface of something), authorities (the people who are in charge of an area), mandatory (you must do things which are mandatory).
