This video is from one teacher in Japan. It can help you with your English speaking. I tested this method. I like this method. Try it. You can be better fast. This video is very long. Some words can be difficult for you. Try to understand the idea.
These are his words. They are in English for Level 1. If you want to read all words which he said, please go to Level 3, but please read this text for Level 1 first.
This video can be very difficult for you but I believe that information from this video can help you.
Hi, Julian here. So, I teach English in Japan for a long time now. And one of the biggest things which people ask me is, “How can I speak well like you?” This is an easy question, but it is a very difficult question too.
First, listen. You must listen to a lot of English. If you want be good at speaking, you must be very good at listening to English first.
Pronunciation is very important too. Also speaking practice. When I say it to my students, often what they say is, “But Julian, this is Japan. This is a Japanese country. We don’t have many chances to speak with people in English.” And this is correct. And speaking with people in English is one way how to practice speaking English.
But this is different practice. This is conversation practice. This is not practising to speak fluently.
Now, to practise to speak fluently, you can do at home when you use materials which you use for your listening practice.
Now, I spoke to people about these beautiful books from Penguin. I have some of them here. This book is about Britain. It is a good book. Now, these books are very good because they also come with a CD. And the CD has the book on it.
And I spoke about them in some of my videos for listening practice. So, first, listen to the CDs many times. 10 times, 20 times, 50 times is fine. But how will it help you with your speaking? You can use a technique: “Shadowing”. Maybe you heard about this before. Many people heard, but many people don’t use it. Now, start using it because it is a very good way how to be good at speaking.
What do you do? You listen to your CD many times. Next, take your book and read it. This is a good time for you to use your dictionary and look for words which you don’t know. When you finish the book, you look at all new words in the dictionary, go back to your CD and listen to it again.
Now, next, this is where you start training to speak like an Englishman. “Shadowing” is to shadow the CD, speak with the CD, to copy the CD. You can listen to rhythm and pronunciation, and copy words very well. Speak like the Englishman on the CD.
OK, I will show you how. So, you have your book, you have your CD. You listened to the CD many times. You understand this CD. You read the book too.
Start your CD and read with the CD.
“In another part of the city, Jamie was preparing to go out. His girlfriend Katia watched him from the bed. I am going to be late for the wedding, he said anxiously. It’s just around the corner. You’ll be there in time. You really don’t mind going out without you, he asked.”
OK, I think this is OK. You get the idea.
Now, you try to finish the book. But this will take a long time. Don’t try to do all the book in one day. 5 minutes every hour is OK. And do difficult parts again and again and again and again. Don’t do them once. Practise them many times.
And then when you have one section perfect, go to the next section. Make every section perfect. Then go to the next section. One day you will finish the book. And again, this will take some time, but it is OK. If it takes two months, it is not important. It is not about finishing fast. It is about finishing well. Do it well the first time. Get your pronunciation right. Get the rhythm right. And this way, you will be better and better fast.
Now, when you finish the book, when you are good with the book. You can do the next step, don’t use the book and do it with no book. So use the CD, speak with it. Practise speaking as the CD speaks. For example: “In another part of the city, Jamie was preparing to go out. His girlfriend Katia watched him from the bed. I am going to be late for the wedding, he said anxiously.”
OK, I think it’s OK.
Now, it is difficult. It can be difficult for an Englishman too. But it is fine because you have time, only repeat it again and again. Practise and be really good. This is the important thing.
Now, this shadowing helps you listen very well to the CD. Not only to words but also to the rhythm and the pronunciation. It makes you listen. And this is a good way to practise your listening. You must be good at listening if you want to speak well.
The second thing, shadowing trains your mouth to speak in the correct way. You can’t only hear a word, read a word, know a word, say it. You must teach your mouth how to speak well. You need to teach your mouth what to do.
And shadowing will help you have perfect English. It will help you use your mouth right. It will get it all in your head. It will train your ear.
So, this is all. Do it please. Practise it. Make your pronunciation perfect.
OK, I think this is all for today. Thank you very much and for more information, please look at my website, www.juliankitagawa.com/learnenglish. There you will see free English lessons and a lot more things about how to be good at English.
