Leopard in a village in India - level 3
This video shows a leopard attacking a man after it entered a village in eastern India's West Bengal state, creating chaos and panic amongst villagers. The video was taken by a witness at the site and shows a man trying to scare the animal away with a stick.
The big cat strayed into the village from a nearby forest, attacking three people. All three were rushed to hospital for treatment.
One of the injured villagers said the leopard pounced on him when he was just looking at the animal like everyone else.
Police and forest officials rushed to the area to search for the leopard, but were unable to find it.
The destruction of wild habitats in the country is one of the main reasons for humans and wild animals coming into contact. Wild animals like leopards and panthers often stray into inhabited areas in India in search of food.
Difficult words: stray (to go somewhere without knowing where you are going), rush (to move quickly), pounce (to move quickly to attack), habitat (an animal’s natural home), inhabited (populated).
What would you do if you saw a leopard where you lived?
