Lion kills lioness - level 3

A male lion has killed a lioness in front of stunned onlookers at a zoo in Texas. The attack happened at Dallas Zoo last weekend. Witnesses described what happened.

“Male lion, the largest one, kind of attacking the, um, one of the small lionesses and all of a sudden, they were just going at it non-stop.”

“There was no blood but it held her down for about 10 to 15 minutes and until she was lifeless.”

“There was some zookeepers on running around, trying to understand what was going on.”

“It was very sad.”

Many onlookers didn’t realise at first that the female lion Johari was being attacked and actually thought the animals were playing. Staff at the zoo were shocked and confused by the incident. The lions had lived together peacefully for years and zookeepers have no idea why the male turned on five year-old Johari. Lynn Kramer, vice president of animal operations and welfare at the zoo, says it’s the first time in his career that he’s seen something like this happen.

“I’ve been in the zoo business for over 35 years. I’ve worked in five major zoos and I’ve never seen a cat kill another cat before.”

Difficult words: stunned (very shocked), witness (someone who sees a crime or an accident), turn on (suddenly attack), welfare (finances).
