Map of Mars - level 3

Map of Mars - level 3

08-11-2013 14:00

Mountains, craters, ancient river beds and lava flows. this is the Martian landscape portrayed in a new video to give the viewer the experience of flying over the surface.

Images have been taken from a stereographic camera on board the European Space Agency’s Mars Express probe. The camera is made up of nine individual image sensors with each one sweeping the surface from a different angle.

The soundtrack created by Stephan Elgner, a member of the mission’s mapping team.

The satellite has orbited the red planet nearly twelve thousand five hundred times (12,500), building up a digital topography that is almost planet-wide. The Mars Express was launched in June 2003 on a two-year primary mission. It has massively surpassed that and is set to continue to relay data back to Earth until at least the end of 2014.

Difficult words: crater (hole in the ground), ancient (very old), river bed (bottom of a river), flow (movement), stereographic (type of a camera), probe (machine for discovering space), sweep (examine), orbit (go around), topography (way the landscape is arranged), massively (a lot), surpass (be better than), relay (send).
