Men carry women - level 3

In Finland’s annual Wife-Carrying World Championships, winners can win beer. In China, the prize is much bigger – a house.

A total of 18 couples, winners from their home cities, participated in the competition in Shenzhen, in south China’s Guangdong Province. The contestants competed in the 150-metre race using a variety of carrying styles.

And the prize went to the defending champions, a Mr. and Mrs. Wu from Foshan City in Guangdong. According to the couple, they started to train in 2011, practicing one hour each day using the “Estonian Carry,” in which the wife hangs upside down with her legs over the husband’s shoulders and her arms around his waist.

But the sport isn’t the safest one around. There were also a plenty of injuries and falls.

The Wus won a seaside house from the organizers, Kaisa Group, a large-scale integrated property developer.

Difficult words: annual (happening every year), participate (take part), plenty (lot), large-scale (big), developer (company which builds houses).
