Metal in the head - level 3

An Australian construction worker has been impaled through his forehead with a metal rod in Sydney.

Nineteen-year-old Kieran Dodge was clearing rubble from the construction site with an excavator, when the bar snapped and went through his head.

Dodge was given morphine and managed to hold the metal rod while ambulance workers freed him from the cabin. His work mates were praised by the paramedics for not attempting to remove the rod.

"They did everything correctly. They kept it in situ, they kept him calm and they called us immediately."

Dodge is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

Difficult words: impale (hit with something sharp and thin), rubble (waste like stones, bricks or concrete), excavator (large machine for digging and moving earth), snap (break suddenly and completely), praise (respect and agree with someone), paramedic (person who give first aid), attempt (try), in situ (in its place).
