More than 50 000 people took to the streets of Athens on Wednesday. They protested against the government’s decisions to save more money and have higher taxes.

Serious clashes started between demonstrators and police. Protestors were throwing stones, petrol bombs and bottles at police who responded with firing teargas.

Police were also chasing demonstrators in front of parliament. There were fires around the parliament.

The demonstrations are the first test for the Prime Minister if he can stand his ground after making unpopular decisions.

Interesting words: chase (run after), stand your ground (not to change your position during a difficult moment).
