People protest in Greece again – level 3, A12
As more than 50 000 people took to the streets of Athens on Wednesday for Greece’s biggest anti-austerity demonstration in months, serious clashes have erupted between demonstrators and police.
Footage from Syntagma square showed hooded protestors throwing stones, petrol bombs and bottles at riot police who responded with several rounds of teargas.
Police could also be seen chasing demonstrators in front of parliament as fires burned around the square.
The strikes are the first test of whether the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras can stand his ground with officials estimating this rally was among the biggest since Greece first resorted to a bail-out in 2010.
Interesting words: austerity (time when a government saves money), hooded (wearing a hood), rally (large public meeting), resort (do something difficult because you don’t have other options), bail-out (financial help).
