Plane crash kills Russian ice hockey team - level 2
A Russian plane crashed into the Volga River and killed 43 of the 45 people on board. The plane was travelling from the northern city of Yaroslavl to Minsk in Belarus. It was on fire shortly after take-off.
On board were members of an ice hockey team, the Continental Hockey League. Its president Alexander Medvedev spoke to shocked people at the opening match of the season after news of the tragedy stopped the game.
“Dear friends today we had a terrible tragedy. On their way out of Yaroslavl for a match against Dinamo Minsk the plane which carried the Lokomotiv team crashed.”
The match was then stopped and there was a minute silence. People say that the plane had trouble after take-off and hit an antenna near the airport. The country has a problem with plane crashes and this tragedy comes after 45 people were killed in a crash in June.
