Plane crash kills Russian ice hockey team - level 3
The burning remains of a Russian plane that crashed into the Volga River killing 43 of the 45 people on board. The plane was travelling from the northern city of Yaroslavl to Minsk in Belarus when it was seen bursting into flames shortly after take-off.
On board were members of an ice hockey team, the Continental Hockey League. Its president Alexander Medvedev addressed a shocked crowd at the opening match of the season after news of the tragedy interrupted the game.
“Dear friends today we have had a terrible tragedy. On their flight out of Yaroslavl for a match against Dinamo Minsk the plane carrying the Lokomotiv team crashed.”
The match was then postponed while a minute silence was held. Reports suggest that the plane had experienced trouble gaining altitude after take-off and hit an antenna near the runway. The country has a poor aviation record and this disaster comes after 45 people were killed in a jet crash in June.
