Planes in Egypt - level 3

08-07-2013 06:00

Military jets in formation fly through a smoggy sky over downtown Cairo, leaving a trail of colour against a sunset backdrop.

The jets flew at low altitude releasing red, white and black smoke to signify the colours of the Egyptian flag. The flypasts took place minutes before the country's interim leader was sworn in. The stunt is likely to find favour with many people who cheered the military's decision to oust the president from leadership.

Hundreds of thousands of people partied late on Wednesday in Cairo's Tahrir Square after Mohammed Morsi was toppled. According to the state news agency, the air force performance was staged to celebrate the triumph of popular will.

Interesting words: backdrop (background), flypasts (a ceremonial flight), interim (temporary), oust (force out), topple (overthrow).
