Postcrossing - English level 3
Do you remember the last time you received a real postcard? As we live in a modern age, we are used to getting plenty of SMS messages and e-mails. But there is an interesting idea, called Postcrossing.
Postcrossing is an online project that allows its members to send and receive real postcards from all over the world. Its members, also known as Postcrossers, send postcards to other members and receive postcards back from other Postcrossers.
The word Postcrossing comes from two words: “postcard” and “crossing”. How does it work? You register your address on the website and immediately you can get up to 5 different addresses. When you have the addresses, you will send a postcard to each of them. It is good to read the members’ profiles, as you can get an idea what postcard they would prefer. For every address you will also get a unique code, which you have to write on the postcard. When the person gets your postcard, he or she will register this code on the website. At this moment you will get a message that the member got your postcard. And at this very moment it is your address which is generated for somebody else. So you can start looking forward to your first postcard to arrive. And everything continues this way. The funniest thing is that you never know what address you will get and who will send you a postcard.
The project is completely free and there are no limits to nationality and age. However, you have to buy postcards and stamps by yourselves.
Nowadays Posctrossing has over 242,000 members in 198 different countries.
This video can serve as a manual to Postcrossing.
