Problems in Greece - level 3

12-09-2011 13:00

Tens of thousands of protesters in Greece have turned the streets of northern city of Thessaloniki into a battle ground. Demonstrators threw bottles, fire and other missiles at police. The protest took place outside the trade fair where the Prime Minister was due to make a speech. Greece is suffering from a severe recession and public spending has been cut. There is widespread opposition to the government low-cost decisions.

There are battles throughout the night as rioters broke shop windows, set rubbish and other objects on fire and fight the police who use tear gas.
