Russia and Greenpeace - level 3
Armed with rifles and shouting orders, this is the moment masked Russian forces stormed a Greenpeace ship and arrested those on board.
This new footage has been released by Greenpeace as it campaigns for Russia to let those arrested go. It shows the activists being forced to move at gunpoint. At one stage, an officer pushes one of the protestors over.
Thirty people including crew members and two journalists have been kept in custody since the raid in September. They were initially charged with piracy but that has now been downgraded to hooliganism. Six of them are British.
Greenpeace had been protesting against oil drilling in the Arctic and some of the activists have tried to climb Russia’s offshore oil rig. Security forces say the protest put their workers in danger, but government officials in the Netherlands have accused Russia of violating human rights.
Difficult words: rifle (gun), storm (attack), footage (video), at gunpoint (while being threatened with a gun), custody (imprisonment), raid (attack), initially (at first), hooliganism (acting violently and causing trouble).
