Seal and cows - level 3

Seal and cows - level 3

24-07-2015 15:00

She was found by none other than a herd of 30 cows. The 5 day-old seal somehow found herself far from water and in a muddy puddle where she became stuck. Birdwatcher Ian Ellis spotted the pup through his telescope and called the RSPB who helped her to safety.

A director of the Natureland Seal Reserve said once they rescued her, she was sent straight to the Seal Hospital.

Vets then focused on helping her rehydrate and gain weight. She's now also on a course of antibiotics to help fight a breathing problem.

When she regains her strength, she'll continue through the rehabilitation process until she's between 60 and 70 pounds (27 and 32 kilograms) and is able to feed in the water by herself. Only then, will she be released back into the wild.

No one knows exactly how she wound up here, but one theory is that she got caught in the tide and then became stranded when the tide went back in.

She’s now been named Celebration and is recovering well.

Difficult words: herd (a group), spot (to see), pup (young seal or other animal), wind up (to arrive somewhere).
