Shark kills a man - level 3
A man has been killed by a shark off Australia’s East Coast, not far from where a surfer was mauled by a shark just a day earlier. The victim, who was a Japanese national, was pulled out of the water by a group of surfers at Shelly Beach in Ballina, New South Wales, on Monday.
“Unfortunately, they were unable to stop the bleeding, and it would appear, at this stage, we believe, that he died of blood loss.”
The attack happened in front of several other surfers who told police the man’s legs were bitten off. Police said the man was a 41-year-old Japanese national who’d lived in the Ballina area for around 12 months and was well-known in the local surfing community.
They said that if a shark expert determined the same animal was responsible for both attacks, it could be destroyed, but surfers believe it should be left alone. The site of the attack is now a police crime scene, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
Difficult words: maul (to attack), national (a person from another country), stage (time), community (a group of people), determine (to study and to decide), site (a place), coroner (a person who studies dead people to find out how they died).
