Students protest in Chile - level 2

15-04-2013 14:00

Students in Chile protested and fought with police. Students fought mainly with rocks, small petrol bombs and even traffic lights. Police responded with water cannon and tear gas.

It was the first big student march this year. It was quite peaceful at the beginning but it ended with violent demonstrations. Demonstrations have been going on for years. Educational reform has become the main political problem. Students got some money for their studies in 2013. But the students say it's not enough. They say there are still many poor public schools, expensive private universities and unprepared teachers.

Interesting words: respond (do something as a reaction), tear gas (gas that makes people cry).
