Two pandas in Vienna – level 3

Two pandas in Vienna – level 3

31-03-2016 15:00

If there are any young pandas watching, look away now! Love is definitely in the air at this zoo in Vienna. Two of the centre's giant pandas have mated several times – a rare event in captivity for one of the world's most endangered species.

The mating season for pandas is once a year, with females only able to conceive for two or three days, making reproduction difficult.

The mammals are known for their low libido, but sparks flew between Yang Yang and Long Hui and the zoo released this video of the pair in action. The zoo said animal keepers had noticed the signs between the two – who are usually loners – for about a week and let the bears "get together".

With gestation taking up to 163 days, keepers will now be waiting to see if the mating was successful. And Yang Yang and Long Hui? Well, they’re off for a lie-down.

Difficult words: love is in the air (when animals or people want to have relationships), mate (to make babies), endangered species (a type of animal that may die out soon), conceive (to get pregnant), libido (wanting to have sex), gestation (the time of pregnancy).
