Vaclav Havel, the Czech Republic president between 1993 and 2003, died. He was 75 years old.

Vaclav Havel was a writer. He wanted freedom and democracy in communistic Czechoslovakia and he spent a lot of years in communist prisons.

As president, he helped Czechoslovakia to get democracy and a free-market economy. He finished as president of Czechoslovakia in 1992 when the country was divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He became president of the Czech Republic when it was created in 1993.

A black flag can be seen over Prague Castle and people are putting candles in the streets all around the country.
