Washington, DC has the name after two important men. Washington is the name after the first US president. DC is for District of Columbia. It has the name after Christopher Columbus.

Washington, DC started to be the capital of the USA in 1800. It is about 110 square km. About 500 000 people live there. 70% of people there are African-Americans. The city has many state buildings. FBI and Pentagon are the most important. The city is very popular for tourists. It has twenty million visitors every year. But it also has a lot of criminality.

Washington, DC has many galleries and museums. Washington, DC has many memorials. The Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The last memorial has 58 000 names of men on it. These men died from 1959 to 1975 in Vietnam.

The White House is in Washington, DC too. It is from white stone. But not many people know where this stone comes from. This stone is only on the Croatian island of Brač.

You can see here a big library too. It is the biggest library in the world. It has over 100 million books.

Washington, DC doesn’t have much street life. It is a typical administrative city. For night life you must go to Georgetown.
