A big sinkhole in Indonesia – level 2
20-02-2026 15:00
A large sinkhole in Indonesia grew to about three hectares. It is damaging the land and causing problems for local farmers.
The ground keeps moving because of landslides and moving soil. Drone videos show big cracks and holes in the fields. Farmers say they cannot plant crops anymore. One farmer asked the government for money or new land because her farm is destroyed. Another farmer saw the sinkhole grow quickly in one day.
Officials say the problem started after an earthquake in 2013. Heavy floods in 2025 made it worse. Experts say the sinkhole could keep growing if people don’t control water in the area.
Difficult words: sinkhole (a big hole in the ground), landslide (when a lot of earth and rocks fall down a hill), soil (the brown substance where plants grow).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
Which two natural events are cited as causes for the sinkhole’s initial formation and its worsening?
