African artists make money on Spotify – level 3

10-04-2025 07:00

Music streaming platform Spotify paid 59 million dollars in royalties to artists from Nigeria and South Africa in 2024.

This amount is much higher than in previous years and reflects the growing popularity of African music around the world.

African artists like Tyla from South Africa and Burna Boy from Nigeria have become internationally recognized, which has helped to boost interest in their music. In 2024, Nigerian artists earned over 37.8 million dollars, and South African artists earned 21 million dollars. These payments are mainly coming from international listeners, who have been increasingly enjoying music from these countries.

The success of these artists has encouraged more mid-level musicians to make a living from their music, creating new opportunities in Africa’s music industry. The increase in royalties is a sign that African music is becoming a powerful force on the global stage.

Difficult words: royalty (money paid for the use of something), recognized (being known or identified because of something special you have done), boost (to increase or improve).
