Australia’s insect collection – level 1

24-02-2025 15:00

There is a big insect collection in Australia. The collection is in a special science building. It has 56,000 insects, like butterflies, spiders, and stick insects.

Some insects are more than 50 years old. A group of people visit the collection. They are from a club. They love nature. They help find new insects and tell scientists about them. One person in the club finds a dangerous insect in 2023.

Brian Thistleton is a scientist. He takes care of the insects. He says that the collection helps people learn about nature. Scientists also use it to keep farms safe. The visitors are very happy to see so many insects.

Difficult words: collection (many things together), stick insects (insects which have long bodies and look like sticks).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How do club members and Brian Thistleton each contribute to the work done at the science building, and what purposes does the collection serve?
