Baltic states don’t get Russia’s electricity – level 3

11-02-2025 15:00

The Baltic states – Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania – have officially joined the European electricity system after disconnecting from Russia.

This change is important because they had depended on Russian electricity for decades. The process took years, involving the construction of new power lines to connect them with Finland, Sweden, and Poland. It also had strong political meaning, as relations between these countries and Russia have been tense since they became independent in the 1990s.

On Saturday, the final transmission lines linking them to Russia and Belarus were switched off, and a ceremony was held on Sunday to celebrate the connection to the EU grid. European leaders, including Ursula von der Leyen, attended the event. The Baltic states had informed Russia and Belarus about their plans in 2024 to prevent any conflicts. The move increased their energy security and independence, especially after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Difficult words: transmission (the act of sending electricity, signals, or messages from one place to another), grid (a network of lines that carry electricity).

How did the years-long process of constructing new power lines to Finland, Sweden, and Poland, along with the disconnection of the final transmission lines from Russia and Belarus, enhance the countries’ energy security and reflect the longstanding political tensions in the region?
