Beer from wastewater – level 3

30-05-2024 07:00

Would you give beer a try after finding out it is made of sewage water? Reuse Brew is a beer engineered in Germany and made from wastewater.

The sewage water used for brewing goes through several purification steps, including mechanical, biological, and chemical stages. In these steps, solid waste is removed, and harmful substances are turned into solid form for easier removal. The last step involves ozonating and filtering the water, which removes anthropogenic traces, making it cleaner than what is required for drinking water. At the brewery, they then adjust the water hardness slightly to make better beer.

Climate change has caused frequent water shortages, and even Germany experiences droughts and seasonal water use restrictions. Reusing treated wastewater is one way to address these challenges. People who tasted the beer brewed with recycled water noted that it tasted surprisingly good and no different from regular beer. The process shows that environmental efforts can lead to excellent results.

Difficult words: purification (the process of making something clean), ozonate (to treat with ozone), anthropogenic (caused by humans).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

What purification steps does the sewage water go through before being used to brew Reuse Brew, and how does this process contribute to addressing climate change-related challenges?
