British couple arrested in Iran – level 3

24-02-2025 07:00

Craig and Lindsay Foreman, a British couple, have been charged with espionage in Iran after being arrested in January. Their detention was only made public last week.

The Iranian judiciary claims they entered the country pretending to be tourists while gathering intelligence. The couple was traveling around the world by motorbike and had planned to stay in Iran for just five days.

The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Iran, warning that British nationals face a high risk of being arrested or detained. Despite this, the Foremans went ahead with their journey. Lindsay, a life coach, had been documenting their trip online, stating that they were researching what it means to live a good life. Their family is distressed and is working with the Foreign Office to bring them home safely. Cases like theirs vary widely, with some detainees being released quickly while others spend years in detention.

Difficult words: espionage (spying to get secret information), judiciary (the system of courts and judges), vary (to be different from each other).

You can watch the video news lower on this page.

How did the couple’s motorbike journey and Lindsay’s online documentation relate to the travel risks pointed out by the UK Foreign Office, and what claim did the Iranian judiciary make about their purpose in Iran?
