Budapest Pride 2025 – level 2

02-07-2025 07:00

Many people joined the 30th Budapest Pride march, even though the Hungarian government banned it.

People wanted to support LGBTQ+ rights and freedom. Some European politicians and Greta Thunberg joined, too. She said the ban was an attack on human rights. At the same time, far-right groups were allowed to march. This made many people angry. The police kept both groups safe and away from each other.

The leader of the opposition party, Péter Magyar, didn’t come. He said he was on holiday with his sons. Still, he shared a message to support the march. Experts think the government wanted to make him talk about difficult topics like LGBTQ+ rights. But he spoke more about daily problems in Hungary, such as high prices, poor health care, and bad roads.

Difficult words: allowed (when somebody lets you do or have something), opposition (a big political party which is not in a government), topic (a thing to talk about).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What did experts believe the government wanted Péter Magyar to talk about?
