Buddhist monks come to Washington – level 3
13-02-2026 15:00
A group of nineteen Buddhist monks finished a 108-day walk across the United States and arrived in Washington. They started in Texas and walked more than 3,700 kilometres to share a message of peace and calm focus.
Many people followed their journey online and came to see them in towns and cities along the way. The monks, dressed in orange robes, also travelled with their rescue dog.
Large crowds welcomed them in Washington. About 3,500 people gathered at a university hall and stayed quiet to show respect. During the long walk, the group faced danger. A truck hit their support vehicle on a highway. Two monks were hurt, and one monk lost his leg, but later joined the group again in a wheelchair.
The monks say their walk is a spiritual act, not a political protest. They teach meditation and encourage people to find peace in their daily lives. The number 108 is sacred in their tradition and stands for spiritual completion and wholeness.
Difficult words: robe (a long, loose piece of clothing that covers the body), gather (to come together in one place), sacred (very special in a religious way), wholeness (being complete, with nothing missing).
