EU countries bring back border checks – level 3
19-06-2025 07:00
The Schengen Agreement allows people and goods to move freely across many European countries without border checks.
It has been in place for 40 years and is a key part of the European Union. However, countries like Germany and France have recently started to bring back border controls. They say this is because of irregular migration, pressure on asylum systems, and concerns about security and terrorism. Experts say these controls may be legal under Schengen rules, but they must only be temporary and for specific reasons. Some experts argue that countries are using border controls for political purposes, not because of real threats. These actions may go against the values of unity and cooperation that the EU supports.
A law professor explains that while many parts of Schengen still work well, the visible problem is the return of internal border checks. This raises questions about how well Schengen can function if countries no longer fully respect the agreement.
Difficult words: asylum (the protection a country gives to people who are escaping danger), temporary (lasting only for a short time), value (the important idea or principle).
