Fighting in Gaza stops – level 3

21-01-2025 15:00

The first three hostages released under the Gaza ceasefire agreement have returned to Israel after being freed by Hamas.

The ceasefire, delayed but now in effect, facilitated this release. In return, Israel will release 90 Palestinian prisoners, including women and teenage boys, as part of the broader agreement to free 33 of the 98 hostages over six weeks. The hostages were handed to the Red Cross and reunited with their mothers. Prime Minister Netanyahu called it a moment of freedom, while British PM Starmer welcomed the release but emphasized the suffering of those still in captivity. Hamas warned that any ceasefire violations by Israel could endanger other hostages.

US President Biden highlighted the importance of sticking to the agreement. Aid trucks are entering Gaza as both sides prepare for further steps in this tense situation.

Difficult words: hostage (a person taken by force to get something), facilitate (to make something possible or easier), violation (breaking a rule or law).
